Rainy Victoria Day Long Weekend

The long weekend has brought lots of rain, and the veggie garden loves it! There are more pea blossoms.

The carrot leaves are finally starting to look like wispy carrot tops.

The beans are starting to bloom bright red flower buds. They really are scarlet runner beans. We can hardly wait to see them fully in bloom.

There are even baby green strawberries ready to grow and turn red with a little sunshine.

And the best part .... our first taste of the garden. Butter lettuce in sandwiches tasted even better hand picked moments before we ate them. Yum, yum!!

Another sunny weekend ...

Another weekend of unexpectedly warm sunny weather in early May has our garden growing great!

The carrot sprouts continue to thrive and our pea plants now have a few blossoms on them. The strawberry plants are blossoming and it will soon be time to harvest the first lettuce leaves!

Our rescued cucumber seedlings have continued to grow and will soon be ready to transplant outside.

The beans are slowly winding themselves up to the sky, and we can hardly wait to munch on them. Yummy!!

Finally, our pumpkin seeds have also sprouted in addition to the two pumpkin plants I bought. Halloween we are on our way :-)

Southlands Nursery 1 : Self-control 0

Gardening is about patience - not about instant gratification - it's killing me!
The garden is doing well, but a little trip to Southlands Nursery today with the girls revealed a whole greenhouse full of cucumber plants, pumpkin plants, basil and tomato plants. The result was somewhat inevitable: replacement cucumbers, yellow bush beans, basil and a few starter pumpkins!

 With a little help from the most junior gardener in the family, the remaining plants were planted and the whole veggie box watered.

Spring Beauty

Not technically a veggie garden post, but we cleaned up the backyard in order to plant our sunflowers. It was an amazing array of pink, purple, aubergine, chartreuse and green.

The lilac shrub bloomed for the first time this spring.

The alliums are starting to burst through.

The blossoming tulips.....

And the lovely shades of lime and forest green of the spirea, spurge, hostas and burning bush!

It was hard not take a moment to appreciate all the beauty around us!

Our little garden continues to grow

After a week of heavy rain, and a sunny long weekend away, our little garden is continuing to thrive. The strawberry plants are blossoming, the peas and beans have taken hold and their vines are winding themselves up their trellises.

Even our little carrot seedlings have poked their tiny heads up out of the ground.

The girls are continuing to show an interest in how the garden is changing. With the help of Vivien, their nanny, they have added to the garden decorations by adding a cheerful rainbow-colored wind turbine.

To my utter surprise and amazement, the munched upon cucumber seedlings have (mostly) continued to live and send out new leaves.  Their strong desire to thrive has encouraged us to continue to give them water, sun and love and we are hoping that they will still make it to our veggie box. The cloche appears to have halted the nibbling advances of Annabelle the cat.

There are no signs yet from our pumpkin seeds, but we are keeping a watchful eye. The final step in our garden planting will be to add some giant sunflower seeds to our flower beds and eventually plant the cucumber plants outdoors.
